Below are descriptions of the courses that I took to complete my Master of Arts in Educational Technology degree at Michigan State University.
TE = Teacher Education
CEP = Counseling, Educational Psychology & Special Education

This course helped me learn about the teaching of diverse academic subjects through the lens of literacy. I had the opportunity to articulate and defend my vision of literacy and goals for students as literacy learners. It also helped me understand the connections among literacy curriculum, instruction and assessment in the local teaching context. I used data analysis, reflection and writing to contribute to my own and others' professional learning and identity.

Reflection & Inquiry in Teaching Practice I

Professional Roles & Teaching Practice II
Instructor: Yu-Han Hung

This course built on prior social studies knowledge and methods learned in previous undergraduate courses. The major assignment for the course was an integrated (social studies focused) unit plan, which was then implemented during my student teaching internship. In addition, a special education focus was infused into the course structure. I also conducted a lesson study with colleagues in the field.

Reflection & Inquiry in Teaching Practice II
Instructor: Dr. Christina Schwarz

This course built on prior science knowledge and methods learned in previous undergraduate courses. The major assignment for the course was an integrated (science focused) unit plan, which was then implemented during my student teaching internship. In addition, I collected, analyzed and interpreted data on teaching, learning and educational policy. I also learned about the dilemmas surrounding research on practice.

Teaching for Understanding with Technology
Instructor: Mary Wever

In this class, I learned how to apply and integrate productivity tools and web-based resources in educational settings to improve teaching and learning. I became aware of and expanded my personal learning network (PLN) and created a 21st-century lesson plan, focusing on the why and how rather than the who and what. I learned that teaching with technology is not just replacing old technologies with fancy new ones. I was also introduced to the idea of TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) to create a cohesive learning environment.

CEP 811
Spring 2018

In this course, I applied instructional principles and methods to educational problems in the K-12 classroom. I learned and used technological applications that are interactive, multi-sensory and innovative. I was introduced to the idea of maker education and learned to incorporate technologies into the classroom in innovative ways to support student learning. I left this course with the mindset that we are all makers.

Adapting Innovative Technology to Education
Instructor: Edith Erickson
CEP 800
Summer 2018

This course examined the foundational ideas of learning, understanding and conceptual change. It explored the ideas, theories and research of learning throughout the centuries. I learned how habits are formed and broken and even set a goal to work on forming a new habit based on theories. I was introduced to the idea that there are not actually different types of learners (visual, verbal, kinesthetic); instead, the type of learning depends on the task at hand.

Psychology of Learning in School & Other Settings
Instructors: Dr. Diana Brandon, Amit Sharma
Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice
Instructor: Andrew Steinman
CEP 812
Summer 2018

This course dug deep into the idea of questioning, which was guided by the book A More Beautiful Question (2014) by Warren Berger. I worked in a team to explore the wicked problem of personalized learning. We asked and researched the questions whywhat if, and how to better understand the problem and come up with a solution. I also took a look at my information diet and noticed that it was limited and worked to expand it access a wider range of information and views. This class has helped me focus on my beautiful question of how to create curiosity, passion and questioning into my own classroom.

Approaches to Educational Research
Instructors: Dr. E. David Wong, Cui Cheng, Swati Mehta

In this course, I learned how to look for and read research. I used the Michigan State University library database to find scholarly-reviewed articles to support various statements. I also did a research project on personalized learning, where I researched and found 15 studies on personalized learning. With this research, I wrote a paper on the best practices for personalized learning.

Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Instructor: Tracy Weippert

This class explores the characteristics of effective literacy instruction. I have developed the expertise to evaluate materials, curricula programs and practices in literacy instruction. I am able to select, modify and design literacy materials, tasks and teaching techniques to meet the specific needs of learners from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. I completed a literacy case study where I planned, taught and critiqued two reading lessons in fluency and comprehension with one of my students.

In this course, I reflected on my journey through the Master of Arts in Educational Technology program at Michigan State University. I looked back on the goals I had when I started and look forward to my future goals. I created an online portfolio where I was able to take time to learn a new website design platform. I updated my resume and reflected on the projects I have created and the biggest takeaways from each course.
